4 feet away -- pump house edge is roughly 3 feet away. It is a shallow well and we know we need to move it / sink a deep well in the future.

Thanks Oldbirch. I talked to my wife more last night, asked her what her needs are, and then prioritized them. I think we can chunk this up in a way that she will be onboard with.

Unfortunately, I just can't yank that window -- the stairs are right in front of it and we would have to move the stairs -- and there really isn't another place to put them. The idea is to push out onto the front porch and have an entranceway to the addition via the new room on the porch. That way we don't need to move the stairs, etc. I would yank the window just to make it an open space to allow wood from the wood stove to move around.

On hold for now. We cleaned out some clutter that was in the house, I got my tools outside in the barn, and my wife has slowed down a little. I also spent some time asking what her needs are, writing them down, prioritizing them, etc. We have a pseudo-game plan for moving forward and that was her big worry -- not having a plan. She is ok for the time being with doing things in phases and cash flowing them.

I don't think we will do anything about an addition for a year. We have other fish to fry and don't have the funds to commit to building on right now. Thankfully.

BTW, I am still intrigued with the idea of building on a true "log" addition. KVR -- do you know how foundations are usually done with a log cabin? Some sort of ground level perimeter foundation or can you do a raised perimeter foundation, for example, and go up from there?

any foundation would work really, I have a book that shows a old cabin where they took metal trash cans and filled them with cement upside down, and used them as pier footings. I have done pier and on a slab, to be honest, I think a slab on grade is quicker and cheaper than piers, once you add lumber, sheathing, insulation etc, have you seen this thread? I love this idea

Thank you, I did see that thread. That's what got me thinking about alternative building styles. I just don't know how that would scale up to a large size -- e.g. 2 stories and I question how much construction adhesive would be needed to join it all together. Still, another good way to build.

Have you decided what you are going to do with this yet pork?

As a side note, my wife was reading this thread and she looked at me and said a vasectomy would be cheaper than a addition, I told her you were trying to make your own basketball team :)
