I like having the seating adjustable. Some friends of mine in Austin put one in with a beautiful concrete bench wrapping around half of it and nobody bothered to keep in mind the temperature of the fire or the direction of the smoke :( Anyone who dares to sit down burns up faster than they can get asphyxiated by the smoke.

I am now working with them to install a hood for limiting the heat to peoples shins and directing the smoke out of peoples faces

wonder if a outer ring by the seating would act as a heat shield, if anyone comments on it, just say it's a foot rest

That's not a bad idea. You can see the fire pit/shin burner below. I also would have pushed for curved seating instead of the sharp 90 corner but it was not my house. If we were to add a partial second course and a partial third course, higher on the seating side, how would you suggest we do it? I was thinking of just buying a sack of SBC, mortaring them, and then putting a light coat on the inside (you can see that that was what was done previously.

honestly, it looks small enough, I would get a tractor tire rim and put it right over it, it should sit 6-8 inches away from the pit and should act as a heat shield, will still be warm but not as bad, if you know someone who can weld, I would weld a chimney with a spark catcher, this is not what a have in mind, but gives you a idea, drop it right on top of the pit, should channel out the smoke\

That is exactly what I had in mind. I will present all three ideas to them and see if they even use it enough to bother modifying it. Also, I think that the tractor tire rim might corrode nicely with the fire pit so we've got options. I've got a MIG welder at my buddy's old shop so I may get it out and start tinkering. The neighbors put up a nice horizontal slat fence with black powder coated posts so I think that the black would be preferable to SS.

other option might be to raise the ring to the height of the bench, it might help with the smoke a little

I like the idea but something cheap and neat is utilizing pallets. We have a local place to get them for free and this is a really neat setup Build the fire pit with like so,

and then follow up with a sofa kit,

Its a easy, cheap and neat setup. What you think?
