I am over straw bale, too labour intensive! I really like the idea of ICF now, as it is something that can be done commercially via an experienced builder. I could finish a lot of the interior off mostly solo saving the cash. I like the insulation properties and if you work in a lot of thermal mass and proper sun exposure you'll still end up with a very efficient home. I still want to figure out a way to get a living roof as well, as that would be awesome.
So many ways to build an awesome home. Since I am so far away from actually getting things going all I have time to do is read and explore so I come across something new that captivates me almost every month it seems. You see the same fundamentals that weave through everything, but there are so many ways to wrap it all up!
yeah ICF's are great, the R value in the walls are insane, we were looking at them but decided against them for 2 reasons, one the cost, since we were paying as we went, I believe the ICF forms would have been like 6500 for us, plus then the cement and everything else, when we were able to do the whole thing for the same price. The biggest thing though was the thermal mass, with the insulation on the inside of the ICF wall you lose the heatsink capability which is a big design element of our house, would be interesting to see the energy performance difference between the two though, insulation versus thermal mass
