and want a small cabin or home, convert a pre-built shed. You could insulate and drywall or T&G pine that very cheaply

i was STRONGLY thinking about doing something like this when I was living in boise a few years back and land was going for so cheap (ID economy got CRUSHED). Seems pretty darn realistic to me. Wood stove, small solar, cistern til you could afford a well, outhouse.... voila-instant compunnd!

My idea had it up on a deck like a yurt would be, so lots of storage and less digging out in the snow.

I was only working part time at an EMS academy teaching paramedic students. the plan was to test out and get on with the county service, but shortly after I moved there the county went on an indefinate hiring freeze and in fact shifts were being cut back. like I said, boise got the crap kicked out of it during the "downturn". with no real future on the horizon and spending just slightly more than I was earning just to get by I had to make the hard choice. seriously, the economy was so bad that i couldn't even find a part time job at a gas station or as a doorman. my friend i was living with was $200K upside down on her place within a year. it was pretty ugly... empty storefronts, every third house in forclosure... if i had just a bit more saved I probably could have rode it out, but thats hindsight. things were ugly & getting worse, so i packed up and headed to colorado springs for work. hated it, packed up & moved to montana.
