I'm not sure how difficult they are since I have never built one, as far as energy efficiency they are suppose to be outstanding. We were researching them when we first moved to Maine in the late 90's. A local contractor was getting into monolithic domes. At the time when I was talking to him, he said for the shell would be about 100 dollars per square foot. After snooping around on the MD site I found out you can buy all the stuff to do it yourself.

A cheaper way would be ferroconcrete or ferrocement, Google that and DIY and you will get a ton of good hits. If you look at the Earthbag thread I posted, he builds a ferrocement roof on it

Also look into light weight concrete or pumicecrete, the method can be very organic and you can really let your creative side out

Cody Lundins house is a shotcrete/ferrocement home as well

I looked at dome kits extensively a few years ago. There are a bunch of wooden/steel "kit" builders out there that make it relatively easy to assemble the exterior. Finishing the interior can be a pain, efficiency is great.

They are cool too in that you can add on by adding another pod and basically doubling your home size.

They can also be completely buried if you want a bunker!
