That made me think of another type of novelty floor covering I saw in either Backwoods Home Mag or Countryside mag. They took the heavy weight roll roofing and rolled it out, glued it down, rough colored side up. Then painted with a couple coats of paint. Followed with a top coat of paint and then painted stencils. Then several top coats of something. It had lasted longer than a good vinyl and was very durable... I'll see if I can find the article... was interesting.
