I have been in love with this idea for years, need to remember this site

Looks beautiful. We have plans to build an addition someday and they include ripping out our staircase and putting in a spiral one. We originally were planning a spiral staircase but last minute changes led to us going with traditional stairs.

This looks like something I could take on myself with oak that is already on the property.

agreed, I have a pic of one like this in a log cabin book, they used wooden posts vertically bolted at the end of each step, then strung heavy rope through holes at the top of the posts for a hand railing, it looks awesome

I bet a railing would help strengthen the steps as well. From what I have seen in spiral stair kits is that the railing is an integral part of the build.

If I was going to build this, I would also frame it from the steps to the floor, creating a nook under the steps and adding strength, kind of like this

Interesting. I can't wait to see what you do with the offgrid cabin.
