I think the best way to get around the expense of having a septic tank installed is to use a composting toilet.

I saw a great article on using 2 - 275 gal containers for a septic system. This would give you more space inside. If I was going to build one, I'd probably go this route, 275 gal totes.

Keep in mind that septic tanks are usually 1000 - 2000 gals. If you have frequent use in a smaller system, you will need to have it pumped more often.

take a look at the design of a composting toilet system. I think it would be fairly easy to make one of these using an RV toilet, some pvc and one of those 275 gal poly tanks.
