When I was in grade school, we used to go to this museum for pioneer "classes" and making cedar shakes was one of the exhibits.

We had a chance to split a shingle loose with a froe and smooth it out with a draw knife, while sitting at a primitive seated bench vise.
Come to think of it, this was probably the beginning of my fascination with primitive living skills. We had class in a one room school house, there was a ferrier, a blacksmith, and a woodshop at the museum.
We used to go to the Henry Ford Museum about once a year, too. Cool stuff.
