I made one with crushed colored glass for a past client that turned out pretty cool. The glass wasn't really my taste but that's what they wanted. The counter came out great and is still going strong

No mesh, it was 2" thick and was supported by ply. We actually built it upside down, put the glass in first, then cement, then left it dry 90% and flipped it into place and cleaned it up with sandpaper and diesel to get the glass to really shine. It is a really cool way to build, I just wasn't too hot on the multi colored glass. It was just what they wanted and fit the design well though. That was in '08 and it still looks great. It is NOT very forgiving if you drop a glass on it though!
