We have done the "traditional pool" thing ad nauseum. Last year we just put up one of the round ones with the inflatable ring (ugly blue thing). I've looked all over Pinterest and I like those natural pools, also like the ones made from stock watering tanks. I really like the deep ones made from shipping containers!!! I have a shipping container here but I don't think the hubby will part with it for that. A pond was the original plan but I don't think we can squeeze the money out this year... I also don't want something huge and expensive to maintain... what to do????? Something like this would be cool.

Here you go HFF, here is the book I was talking about

The Renewable Energy Handbook: Amazon

I took some pics,

They actually built 2 pools, their main one and a bio filter one, the water flows out of the main and down the to the filter pool, then they pump it back up into the main

they take tires and fill with soil and stagger them, which creates steps going into the pool

they excavate the middle some more and build steps going up the sides

and then use a liner and fill the pool

that's pretty much the basics, the book goes much more in depth with the piping and the hot tub they built into it as well

I love those swimming ponds and bio pools. I just need something faster this year. So much other necessary work needs done first... :-)
