Looking to finalize Insulation decisions.

I believe K and R Roy used XPS.

...here are some things I have been looking at:

Thinking/looking at going this way under the floor/slab:

The Amvic Insulated Panel for Radiant Heating, for under the slab.. it is EPS, interlocking 2'x4' panels, R10, ready to accept PEX.  Here's a link.

http://www.amvicsyst......com/ampex

I like the product, EPS, put it down, snap in PEX, place concrete, done...a time saver compared to laying mesh and attaching PEX...need to price it out, I thin Amvic is about 10 to 15% more.

Or....

Been looking into insulation blanket.

Low-E Slab Shield

http://low-e.com/med.....15_web.pdf

Comes in 4' x 250' rolls, R 2.9, also a vapor barrier, tape the seems, then lay mesh and attach PEX.  Would be quick to put down.

....I am starting to price out the Amvic, the Low-E, traditional XPS for under the floor.

Anyone with experience with any of these?

General thoughts/first impressions?

...one thing in back of my mind...If I went with XPS (like R Roy and K) would it be okay to go with 1 inch at R% under the slab and footer?

interesting product

we used something similar when we poured a slab in our business, it was more of a styrofoam type material though and I wasn't really impressed with the rigidity of it.

I prefer the 2 inch due to it's stiffness and compressive strength

Hey Speed and K.

I can get 4x8 x 2inch sheets of Dow for $36 new....I know that is a good price.

I talked with the Excavation guy today (he's the one that told me about the Slab Shield).  He has used it  under slab and footing and added in the PEX for heating.  He tells me he is very pleased with the results. I told him I was skeptical with R2.9...he said the hydronic system is performing as engineered.

I am very tempted to go with the slab shield based on cost per square foot and ease of use.

I believe that's what we paid, what's the price on the slab shield?

k, I can only find the numbers on  4/100 rolls, for $199 a roll, so 50 cents a sq ft...actually a little more, I have to by the seem tape too.  I talked to Tim again, he said he had good dry site like we do, put down about 4 inches of sand like we are doing, then he put down 6 mill plastic because he had it, then rolled out the slab shield and connected PEX to it...happy with it's performance for the past two winters.

...so slab shield is about half the price of XPS...maybe a little quicker to put down...based on our under slab sq footage the difference is about $600...XPS being about $1,200...still need the Mesh and Pex either way...

...I wish the slab shield was a higher R value, but that doesn't seem to be an issue...and according to the hydronic heat info I have they only Spec out an R 5 under the slab, not an R10...Not sure what we are going to do yet...the cost is not a deal breaker for us...just want the best approach for our application.

not a bad price, I would go with whatever you feel most comfortable with, if the thought of the R 5 is troubling you now, it will be worse once the house is built, especially the first year, I spent a lot of sleepless nights wondering if I did certain things the correct way.

I am good at second guessing things.  We are spending a lot of time and money on this...Important to get it right.  After the holiday I will be sharpening the pencil and that will help a bit.
