also, when doing woodwork or any work that involves cutting or drilling, make sure you bits and blades are sharp. Using a dull blade will shorten the lifespan of your power tools.

The best way I have learned about building and fixing things is Youtube. My wife makes fun of me but since my dad passed away 6 yrs ago I don't have him to ask for help with fixing stuff like I used to. Now if something is broke I will do a google or youtube search and see how to fix the problem. Then I go and fix it.

Another option is to find buddies or people at work who are doing home projects (like a new roof) and offer to help for some experience. Then you just ask questions while helping. They get free help and you get knowledge, it is a win-win.

how do you learn? reading, seeing, hearing or doing? For me I learn best by reading. This a awesome book that goes over many different types of alternative construction methods and they show a step by step building of a small building incorporating all the methods

Building Green: A Complete How-To Guide to Alternative Building Methods Earth Plaster * Straw Bale * Cordwood * Cob * Living Roofs

Just ordered this book or the updated version.

Man online ordering does such a nice job with "suggestions."

Ended up getting Rob Roy's book as well, the one that started it all for your during the shoulder surgery.

And while I was at it went ahead on grabbed the $50 and up underground house book, and a water systems book.

The $50 and up underground house, looks interesting based off reviews for the statements and viewpoints about affordable housing.

If nothing else it can help provide some motivation for learning to build things on your own.

Update realize I left off the Rob Roy book, however, now I have run across his entire list, so will have to pick and choose which one or ones to get.

Turns out I left the Roy book off the order by accident.

Looking at them a bit closer now before buying.

Leaning towards the Earth-Shelted Houses and "Stoneview: How to Build an Eco-Friendly Little Guesthouse."

Several of his books seem interesting.

Noticed on his website that he teaches workshops, sort of tempting in a wacky vacation sort of way to consider attending a workshop.
