Anyone here with experience with metal roofs know much about lightening protection?
When I grew up all the old barns had lightning rods. I look around at the all the pole barns in my area and hardly ever see lightning rods.
There are a number of online specialty places that will put together a kit for you and ship it for a DIY install...looks pretty simple.
Is it worth investing in a lightning rod system?
you already have a lightning rod, your metal roof.
Just kidding, I was concerned about the same thing but from my understanding a metal roof is actually safer and does not attract lightning, in case of a strike it is fireproof and helps spread the discharge around the building.
With that being said I wonder if just adding an extra grounding rod to each side of the house and strapping it to the roof would be any benefit, I probably ground those to the main house ground as well though.
I would pose that question to your electrician friend and see what his thoughts are.

...I thought about just grounding the roof too. I asked my electrician friend and he said he hasn't seen it being done and there is nothing in the Code...he said it was just a way for people on the internet to scare people and sell stuff...maybe?
I think a huge difference for me is a Metal roof & Masonry/Earth siding...the whole thing is grounded and non combustible...so I am thinking there is pretty low risk.

Decent links Looks like a Risk Assessment in terms of Likely Hood of getting struck vs cost of system.

"Should I install lightning rods on my metal roof?”
In most situations, it is not necessary to install lightning rods on your metal roof. Lightning strikes to homes are rare. If your roof is the highest point of a surrounding area, you may consider having a lightning safety system installed on your home.

It's on the middle of future priorities list.
Need to check with my insurance company to see if there is a discount for having it (that will factor in cost/benefit).
I am in a lower area on the hill side and there are a lot of tall pines behind me...that doesn't eliminate my risk...but decreases it a bit.
Would like to do...but...comes down to $$$ vs actual benefit that is 'perceived'
