I'll throw a vote in for Idaho as well. You can probably get on more like 5-10 acres for similar cost to 1 acre on the east coast. It is part of the "American Redoubt", if you buy into that. I'm from Idaho, so that hasn't had any impact on my choices. While the eastern and northern portions have harsh winters, the area around Boise, also called the Treasure Valley has quite mild winters. Most people have their greenhouses going by mid January, and get planting late Feb to mid March. It has been near 60 degrees for the last week. Cost of living is low, people are courteous and friendly. Hunting and fishing are great. I love it here.
