We are trying to limit the expense of some of the projects around here and instead of buying all new fencing and materials my wife thought we should give a pallet fence a try. I am thinking something 20x20 or smaller. Fence only needs to be about 4 ft high -- it's the small critters that worry me and I figure some hardware mesh along the bottom will keep them out.

Any suggestions other than a pallet fence? The only fence I have done recently was split rail and to do the garden right it would be a couple hundred bucks.

I've seem some cool designs where you pull the slats from the back of the pallet and cut out designs.

Our goal is to get a garden, any size, started here soon. I think I can get enough pallets to get the fence made but they most likely will be random sizes. I was figuring on putting posts in the ground, putting 2x4s between the posts, and nailing the pallets to the 2x4's.

I am open to any suggestions -- my only requirements are that it can actually keep animals out and looks halfway decent. If we use pallets we plan on painting them and cutting the tops to making it look more like a fence.

Thanks KVR. That reminds me -- is there a way to search the forum via posts from a member? Like 'all posts from member' xyz or similar?

at this point in time there is not, there is a major upgrade coming to the forum software in a month or so, I know the developer has talked about adding that function, try just searching for their user Id, that will usually bring up a bunch of their posts

What about snow fence? I think I would only need 3 or 4 rolls and some t-posts. More than I wanted to spend but I may be able to find used now that winter is over.

$40 at Menards per 50' roll

Thanks for this thread Porky. My varmint fence last year was garbage. I think deer ate most of my stuff. I have a place down the street that lays pallets out all the time for free.

I may do this. I would love that dirty old wood look for my garden.

I did do a pallet fence for motley mutton. I don't have any pics but I can probably get some. We basically used a pallet in between each set cross ways to act like a foot support, but you can do the same thing (and save yourself a bunch of pallets in the process) by setting metal or wood posts at the seams and attaching the pallets with wire or screws to the posts. I'll try to get you some pics of both soon.
