there is no development, nothing has changed. I don't think people realize how rural Maine really is. We have just under one million people and 1/4 of them are around the portland area. We live outside bangor which is the 3rd largest city in the state with only 30,000 people, there is a lot of open land here

1. an outhouse and no running water? will this cabin only be used in summer? I'd hate to have to go take a dump at 3 am in the middle of a snow storm.

2. Is there a water source (stream, river, spring) on the property?

besides ease of construction, and cost of materials, are there any specific benefits to this type of construction?

high thermal mass, relatively easy to heat, cost and ease are the biggest selling points imo though. The estimate I saw many years ago was 10 cords of wood to build a 1200 sqft building. That is anywhere from 1200 to 2400 dollars for the shell of your building. There are 3 methods of building with cordwood. The round style as pictured above , stacked corner where you cross stack the corners.

and infilling in a timber frame structure

I prefer the round, it's the most efficient use of material and the easiest to heat
