We are going to put in a garden and a better parking area around our place in the next few weekends. Not sure if you all remember the "flood" picture but we have some low spots in these areas that I want to raise up. I figured I would get ~10 yards or so of screened fill dropped off ($20 a yard) and go to town. Below is my plan -- thoughts/advice? I've never done this before.

Use a dirt scoop on the back of my tractor to move material. Wish I had a front end loader but this is what I've got. I would drop off more than I need and then go to the next step...

Switch to my back blade and pull the fill material into the hole. I figured I would then drive over the low spot with one of my back tires trying to compress the fill. Then I would scrap some more in there and drive over it again until it seemed good and packed down.

This is not me or my tractor...

I wouldn't compress it to much, I would just fill, mound it a little, the soil will settle, throw down some seed and cover it with straw

OK. Some of these areas are going to be left open and some are going to be covered with stuff (our garden in raised beds, pallets holding firewood, etc.). KVR what do/did you pay per yard of fill out there? My wife was surprised to hear dirt was going to cost us $250 -- I think thems are the breaks.

OK, moving dirt around with an 8N sucks. The trip bucket worked OK but definitely was not perfect. It will not trip if there is a lot of material on either extreme of the scoop. Also, driving over the same slightly damp area turned into a huge mess. In the end it ended up OK and will allow us to build our garden soon -- our main goal.

Tools of the trade -- dirt scoop:

And a side project this morning -- moving and filling up a sandbox I built a year ago. The kids played in it for hours. My wife also trimmed up the pine tree behind the sandbox. What was a wild growing tree with a bunch of old limbs now looks good.

It is just field grass. Whatever grows natural in a forest plus some rye or clover that the previous owner threw out there for deer. I want to put down some really nice grass seed out there next Fall before the first snow hits, supposedly the best time. We picked up some grass seed and a straw bale today to cover up some of the dirt spots. Next up is finished the chicken coop and building the garden.
