Just wanted to share one of the many projects from a recent renovation. For those interested in adding a sliding glass door to an existing structure this is more or less what we did.

The existing door. Very much in the corner and restricting where a table could be located in the kitchen. So to improve both lighting and flow through the kitchen, we went with the patio door because it effectively moved the door 36 inches to the right.

Step 1: Carefully remove drywall inside. The left of the door frame already has a jack stud and a king stud. So we cut to the rough opening required by the door plus 3 inches (for jack and king). You can see that the insulation job (blown in from the outside some years back) left some to be desired.

Vacuum all of that out and bag it up (can be re-used in the attic):

Now do the same from the outside with the sawsall and reframe:

I went back with the circular saw after it was framed to clean up the cut:

Framed out the new step: no rebar pictured but you can see the holes that I drilled for 1/2" sticks.

Finally, pour your step addition and have a beer:

Budget:

Patio Door     300.00
Interior trim     11.16
Exterior trim     8.62
Studs     5.52
Insulation     5.93
Drydex - Drywall patch     7.48
Concrete - 5 bags     19.21
    Total 357.92

Great post! Any plans to re purpose your old door? Did you reuse the blow insulation over your now patio door or use fiberglass?

Thanks NS! I used the old door to replace a side door and trashed the side door as the glass was badly damaged and the metal frame dinged pretty badly. I thought about replacing the glass and bondoing the door but didn't have enough time.

I also took some fiberglass bat from the attic for the spot above the door. It was easier than trying to re-use the blow insulation without any netting.
