To state the obvious: That's above ground. Anyone in an area which freezes will want to bury beneath the frost line,

My plastic cistern tank is 1550 gallons and sits above ground at the moment. We DEFINITELY get hard extended freezes here. A large tank takes a while to freeze. A couple or 3 days won't usually do it. We dropped a stock tank heater in ours and it took care of it during the recent arctic freeze.

Just to add to your point though, remember theres 2 different kinds of tanks, one for above grade and another for underground. If you bury the wrong kind it will collapse from ground pressure when the water gets low inside it.

Good points.

You also just addressed a concern I've had for my own catchment. I expect to have very little money to get it started. All money will have gone to other initial expenses. I plan to use the 55 gallon plastic food grade barrels you often see. Trouble is, those lack the capacity and would freeze faster. A tank heater is not something I had thought of. Makes me wonder if I could rig some kind of heating method. I think water will be an issue during my first year or more. But its remarkable what the right idea can solve.

Wonder if it would help retain heat if you put all your barrels together in a group, sides touching, and tarp them? I think it would.....
