I have access to plenty of medium to large sized logs. I would like to begin making decorative pieces but for starters want to make a cutting board as a valentines day gift for mee maw. I have already sliced it, I'll try to see if I can get some pics of the process if you all can help!

Let me know if you have any questions on the wood. I will definitely get a pic tomorrow but its about a foot in diameter & its mesquite. I would like to cure & treat it but don't know how & couldn't find any vids online. It will be used to cut & chop meat & veggies.

Thanks, in advance.

Welcome Niteprowler, for a cutting board you would want to use either mineral oil or beeswax, I know some people swear by carnauba, but the first two would be my choice. Any specific questions on the type of wood itself @hessian and @eddienlinda should be a big help, they would be the two guys I would ask.

Would love to see a pic!

Cool someone is using WOOD, always important to check if the wood is food grade safe species. Some woods are to porous, others are toxic especially after applying a sealer.

I have almost always used Bird's Eye Maple for cutting boards.

No worries on the drying and curing of the wood, you live in Texas? If so start slowly changing it's climate, we want to see if it check's or not. Do you know how to test for moisture content? Wait when is Valentine's Day?

Mesquite looks sharp though.

I love that second one Hessain showed.  It's beautiful.  Really makes me want to chop some meat.

I have never used mesquite before besides for smoking meats.

The grain lines are outstanding! It would go really well with a Asian Teak for grain and color contrast finished Natural.
