Sourcing materials and prices.

Got a price on Closed Cell XPS, 4x8 sheets:

2"  $36.42/sheet (discount at 48 sheets)

1.5" $27.35/sheet (discount at 64 sheets)

1"  $18.21/sheet (discount at 96 sheets)

Discount would be about 9% once you reach the minimum # and go up with the more I buy)

Doing all walls/footers/under slab/frost-wing insulation/ and garage floor plus apron I would need right around 175 sheets for everything...ugh...adds up fast.

Figuring the 10% discount, 175 units x $32.78 a sheet = $5,629.75 ( I think I can get that closer to $5,500+)...this is going with 2 inch on everything...If I mix it up and cut down the amount of 2 inch I am sure I can knock down the material cost...but a worst case price is always good to know.

Not sure how comfortable I am going 'thinner' on walls or footers or under the floor...frost protection/wing insulation I will keep at 2 inch...

A little more to figure out...getting there.

I would personally say go for the 2". The only instance in which I would go thinner is if it was a rental or something that you planned to sell where you're just trying to meet minimum code. Here in Texas sourcing the thick stuff just became too much of a hassle so I ended up with 1/2" and 3/4" and I really wonder if it's doing anything. (R3 is better than nothing and it keeps my sheathing above dew point but I would have preferred to have gone thicker if it was available).

I am leaning towards the 2 inch; However, I am undecided about under the slab--Might go with the rolled/blanket kind  A bit concerned about the lower R value of the Blanket though.

...what do you guys think about the pricing?

K,

If I go with Roll Insulation under the slabs (house and garage) it's about $1,100 cheaper than going with 2 inch foam.

Anywhere you could save that somewhere else? 3/8 drywall versus 1/2, etc.

You know me K, I want to save a buck everywhere.

I have gone over most every area in terms of practicality and simplicity and cost effectiveness...I would be surprised to find anymore cost savings/or shavings...I could be wrong.

You seem pretty strong on the 2 inch board?

...I think the big thing will be what we decide on PEX (other post below)...we don't do PEX then I am not insulating under the slab of the garage...which saves on PEX and On the Insulation under the garage.

...trade offs, always trade offs...
