Even in Texas, where we have more warm months than cool, I would be tempted to insulate beneath the slab. During the winter months with tile the floors are just too cool.Didn't speed funk have raised floors? Not enough space for Insulation but an air barrier, and wood feels warmer due to a lower thermal capacity and conductivity than concrete or stone.
Yeah i'd say our stone/concrete floors are usually a bit chilly in winter as well (so far). I'm hoping now with the umbrella done I can start to raise the under umbrella temp . I figured if I insulated below the concrete/stone floors i'd be restricting how much energy could be absorbed through direct solar contact. I'd like to also add a nice thick carpet for living room (stone) someday..keep us in effect insulated a bit more from the slightly chilly floor.
You really bring up some good points ic!! Well typed lol.
I have raised floors in bathroom and bedrooms. In bedrooms Its exactly like you said where the lower thermal capacity makes it much warmer on your feet. These rooms have no chance of solar gain really so I wanted them wood b/c its cozier and softer for bedrooms. The Bathroom is tile which still has a chilly feel.

I look at it this way...there is more than way to accomplish most things...when it comes to building a bunker...I mean house...we do the best we can with what know and what we can afford. Plus location and lay of the land are always unique circumstances.
There is no single way of doing this, but sharing knowledge and experimenting moves us forward and builds community. I am sure we all have some home runs and I know we all have some strike outs. But, in the end we have a better and more satisfying product.
