Came across this on TedX. I really appreciate how integrated everything has multiple uses (like in Permaculture) and thought I should share it. I know it's not exactly a DIY or a project idea but if anyone can get inspiration from it, that would be awesome.

Essentially they're using undesired lands that are otherwise barren to desalinate, grow food, and generate electricity.

Much as this planet really could use more foresting (which mankind has ravaged), until humans begin to revere trees enough to plant more than they 'harvest', deforestation will continue to be the trend. Sure reclaiming a previously 'barren' area is impacting and admirable, but so is planting trees right in one's back yard! The legend of Johnny Appleseed is one that has been ignored too long. I've had apple seedlings pop up in my garden because those tough little buggers don't die (for us) in composting. Each time that happens, I take the seedling out into the 'wild' part of my area and give it a chance. Doesn't take me long and Ma Nature is happy to take over from there.

Nice! Absolutely agreed Jain. I've also been looking into growing algae because they convert CO2 to O at a much higher rate (better photosynthesis). However, I believe that you've hit the root of the problem. Less lawns, more trees.

Lawn began as a 'status symbol' - displaying that one had so much pasture that they didn't need to make use of all of it. Sadly man is more motivated by status than understand and revering what really works in life. But then again, perhaps work has become the ultimate 4-lettered word?!? Cry
