gw99 do you plan on the larger "tank" being located in a climate controlled area? If the temp falls below a certain range composting stops.

The maintenance to your larger unit does sound ideal -- much easier than what I wound up with. We didn't have the space or elevation for a larger unit. It really became a burden trying to clean the unit in our bathroom. I can confirm that the composted waste does not smell. Even with all of our troubles I was always amazed that it did not smell and looked like rich black dirt. We didn't get the chance to use it long enough to try and grow flowers with it (a suggested use for the compost or letting it compost for a year and THEN use it on veggies/fruits) but I had high hopes for its richness.

I would also recommend going with a fan for the vent stack. You can google around but almost everyone runs into the need for better venting. Just watch the power draws. My AC powered Biolet used quite a bit of power -- much more than I would have guessed.

Sorry to be the worry wart here, just giving you my mistakes, but I would also plan out how the composting chamber will vent and also build in regular DWV for a normal toilet while you are building the house. We did not build in regular DWV and I had to run it alongside the house when we removed our composting toilet. It doesn't look the greatest but it works. Could have been easily taken care of for little money while I was in the rough-in stage.

yes, I plan to put the BASE container of the composting toilet inside the house. In a room, just under the toilet room. (toilet goes on 2nd floor)

I'm planning to put a door that leads outside in the BASE room. This way emptying the bin should be easier and I won't have to haul the compost through the house.
