So while celebrating the socialist holiday known as "Labor Day" I decided to build a tipi for the kids. The first go-round was a little too small. So I figured, what the hay, and fired up the chainsaw. Cut down some pines I didn't like anyway and went to town. I need to go buy some cheap painters canvas fabric and cover this sucker up. I may add a 4th pole for strength and to make the bottom diameter bigger.

Any of you all built one of these before? Tips?

I have not built one, how is the top lashed? Is the base of the poles buried in the ground at all? What about cutting some short pieces and pinning the bottoms together just to keep the bottoms from possibly kicking out?

I just tied some rope around the top to lash them together. I think I will add a 4th pole for strength. After doing some more research I saw where you cut small pieces and lash/nail them near the top. That would limit the spreading although not as strongly if around the bottom.

The ends of the logs are somewhat pointed from cutting them down, they are dug into the ground and I put stones around the bottoms of them. I think with a 4th pole and some small pieces secured at the top I should be "OK".

This is a practice attempt for building something like this...

My wife brought it to my attention that I should cover the stacked firewood with a roof. I am hoping I can knock something together like the above with some skinned pine logs that will do the trick.

wow, if I didn't know better, I would think that was rinkus's wood shed, he has something very similar to it. Wonder what would be the best way to water proof a drop cloth?

I have read to just paint the drop cloth. Sounds like a lot of work -- if I go that route I may just spray it with a Scotch Guard like spray or just buy vinyl coated drop cloth -- I have one but it isn't the right dimensions. A few of them might get the job done.

I think so. I was just going to buy a few cans of cheap stuff at Walmart.

Rinkus -- can you post pictures of your wood shed?

A book called "Mountainman Crafts and Skills" by David Montgomery has all the info for a Tipi in it plus a lot of other useful information.
