One of my students has a father who is crazy smart. He has built his own house and it is amazing. He used the dry stack method for the basement walls. He built the house into a mountain and has a huge dead space around the walls that you can actually walk through. So you have solid rock on one side and dry stack on the other. Absolutely NO WATER penetration is really possible. Now I am going to have to build my house up and back fill, we'll see if he has an option that is less intensive as building a second wall, that would be cost prohibitive. I've considered putting gravel against the house and then back filling, idk. We'll see how it goes, I'm just rambling at this point but I plan to blog the process. Well gets squared away next week and then we will start clearing the building site!

awesome roli, one option would be to put culvert around your building and then back fill over it and against the building, would be great for storage and such,

could put a floor in it and such as well

What a stunning idea! Gravel on the side close to the house and dirt on the other. I like this a lot better then any other ideas I had.

I was envisioning having a fake wall in a crawl space, just on one side of the house.

For bermed houses especially container homes this makes a lot of sense.

My drawings have outside access to all walls. It allows for maintenance workers to never have to enter the living space. Gives the ability to control ambient temp and air flow. Mostly though it frees up precious living space and moves electrical and most plumbing outside of the inner house.
