My wife and I sat down and had a serious discussion as far as what we were going to do, after such a hard winter and our employee opening up a competitor across town, we decided it was best to just hold off till the middle of the summer before we do anything with the cabin. The other deciding factor was the fact of my brother planning to move up, if he does, he will be involved with the business, plus my daughter is still showing interest in being involved, if that's the case then we will seriously need to look at opening a second location. That's a lot of chiefs for our small place, so every extra penny will need to be saved to be able to make that happen. Now we do have the money sitting there from having the land logged off last year, which should be enough to finish our projects around the house, so our primary location is complete. Technically, I don't think the projects ever really end.

So I walked around yesterday making a list of the projects I want to tackle.

Top priority is a greenhouse, I walked around trying to figure out what I want to do, and I keep coming back to our smokehouse, which was to fulfill that need. I'm thinking I'm going to remove the rocks and fill from the front and build a glassed in greenhouse extending out the front of it, still working on sketching it out, but this will probably be the first thing

The next project would be a solar powered slow sand filter for the pond and develop that more into a natural swimming pool, this is going to be a major project if I tackle it

I need to get some swales and drainage built into the yard so I can develop the gardens more, with how wet we were last summer, this is a pretty large priority, we couldn't even get back to the beds to top them off with out destroying the yard because of all the standing water

once the swales and drainage is done, I can tackle fencing in the back field better, whether it be a mini dexter or the pigs, I want them to have more grazing

develop and terrace off our huge hugelkultur berm, it is a great asset that we need to utilize better

I need to redesign my solar generator to make it more user friendly so that I can easily transport it anywhere around the property

I'm thinking something like this

I need to redesign the compost bin and make it more user friendly, I hadn't checked on it in awhile and was shocked at how good the chickens did with turning it over

I need to redo the firepit into a more permanent structure with some grilling options added to it

I still have that fridge which will become a worm farm

Need to build the outdoor kitchen/cook area which will include a rocket stove for canning, bread oven and a cajun microwave, thinking of putting it here on the end of the porch

I need to clear out behind the berm, bush hog it and set in drainage, it's about a 1/2 acre that we don't utilize and if my daughter ever gets serious about a small cabin, it would probably be the best spot for it

woodshed is a top priority as well, finishing the earth roof on our generator shed, etc, etc

Hope to get started on the greenhouse in the next couple weeks once it dries out better

A new roof is next on the list, having a few estimates done next week. I would just as soon do it myself, but MrsMedic is 100% I will fall off the roof and kill myself. I keep telling her its a win win because we pay like a dollar a month extra on our insurance for a cluse that states if one of us dies the house gets paid off. She's not buying it.....

Just got the 4-wheeler paid off, so we should be able to afford it. Just pains me to pay somebody else to do something that I can easily do.

Still attacking the never ending blowndown pines, I honestly have 4-5 years of firewood just laying there. 5 acres doesn't seem very big til you're looking at bucking up about 150 logs and trying to figure out how to clear a triple widowmaker without killing yourself. Oddly, these things don't seem to concern MrsMedic in the least.

for the second year in a row, trying to make building our green house a priority. Just didn't have the $ last year. New job means I can afford it, but I'm gone literally half the time now so I have to pick my projects. And I need to find a guy to do some leveling for me.

Need to tear down an old shed and build a bigger new shed with an awning to park the raft trailer on, which also needs to be levelled better.

Nice to be back here, been a busy & brutal winter. Missed you guys.

Oh yeah... part of the hold up on the roof was because we were waiting to see how feasable a full solar system would be and if it was going to go on the roof we wanted to make sure everything was intergrated and done at the same time.

So we had a local company do a site survey. They said that I'd have to clear about an acre of trees to get the exposure we'd need, and that isn't happenning. I didn't buy a place in the pines just to raze it. BUT what we are going to do is put up a decent panel (pole mounted), a battery bank, a generator pigtailed in, and a regulator to run the whole system. So we will always have the back up power we need and can charge the battery bank even if the sun isn't shining (it IS Montana, after all, and the winters are long and dark), and when we are generating power beyong charging the battery bank we will be putting back into the grid, which we get credit for from the power company. So, while not being able to cut the only wire that comes into my home is a disappointment, overall its promising that I will be able to fill our minimun needs (well pump, keep the fridge & freezer running, a light or two. thats all we really need).

When I get the details on that set up I'll try to make a thread on the process.

Ummm........... I got REAL busy and then it got REAL cold. Add that to the list too, lol. It was a hell of a winter between just dealing with an insane amount of snow, having to get more wood put up than I had which was a real treat in said snow (lesson learned!) and the new job which had (still has) me busier than I would honestly like to be. All worth it in the long run, but the property hasn't got the love it needs, I've just been keeping my head above water on that front.

Snowed last night, 2"-4" called for tonight, so i am sitting in an airbase with 0% chance of flying anywhere. I'm beginning to doubt summer will ever come.

We want to get started on putting up fencing for a herd of goats so they can do some underbrushing, and raise the trees on the property.
