Saw this same thing in some book I had in 5th grade. It was done in the desert covering a hole in the sand with plastic sheeting. Supposedly you can collect the condensation. I don't know why that always stuck with me but I remember it vividly.

yep, you can also pee on the sand and recirculate water through that
