I came across this emergency checklist the other day, I was happy to see it wasn't a "normal" prepping site but a diabetes advocacy group, is there any other special needs a person could have that would need specific considerations?

what is the shelf life on insulin j?
that one can be argued for a long time. unrefrigerated insulin is required to be discarded after 28 days of use. Then taking into consideration the many different types of insulin can make it less clear. I am unsure on all the numbers, and I will look into it. Off the top of my head, there is regular insulin, insulin aspart, NPH insulin, 70/30 NPH/regular insuline, insulin glargine (Lantus), and insulin detemir (Levemir). I know I am missing a few of the new ones, but those are the primarily used insulins. It is also important that some form of fast acting glucose is available, both oral (glucatrol, or a tube of decorative frosting) and injectable (like glucagen) in case of a hypoglycemic crisis. I would not want to be a diabetic in a SHTF situation, or have CHF or COPD or Asthma for that matter.

From what I can gather, if a vial of insulin is kept refrigerated, it is good for at least until it's expiration date. If it is no longer good, it should become obvious in your blood glucose readings, since it will simply become less and less effective.
If it ever were to become frozen, it would not longer be effective. So best plan, keep it in the fridge. Paying attention to the exp date is your call. I'd guess with proper storage it should last a mite longer.
