Stocking up on food is one of the cheapest insurances one can 'buy'. But there are other items that one ought to consider having a decent supply of.

Basic cleaning products - soap - body, dish, laundry enough to last for several months. Bleach, not just for laundry, but hygiene reasons too. Hydrogen peroxide is cheap and a great wound cleaner (pain less too!).

I'm now using a mixture of vinegar + dish soap in a spray bottle for use around the kitchen. It is working nearly as good as the much more expensive 'bio-orange' product that I had been using. The vinegar odor doesn't last long either. Plus vinegar is a good hard water cleaner and used for food pickling as well.

Aspirin remains cheap and still a great fever, inflammation reducer and of course basic pain med. Stores well for years. Bandages were boiled (cotton) rags for nearly a century before commercially available. Old cotton sheets, t-shirts work well too. In a nursing course years back I was told that a woman's sanitary napkin is an excellent sterile dressing in emergencies.

My personal motto - The Home, a peace worth fighting for.

Straight bleach is a disinfectant for all sorts of surfaces, can also be used to treat water for most bacteria.

Yes, maxi pads are good for a field dressing or Abd dressing.  I question how sterile they are from what we have seen.  We consider them clean not sterile (regardless of the packaging).

Having your own dedicated medical box is huge.  We have two sets that break into multiple areas (primary are medical, surgical, pharmacologic, PPE)...side note, get and learn how to use a few suture kits.

I would highly recommend that medical supply is something we should all have, after all it is the 3rd "B" (beans, bullets, band aids).  However, most people have poor first aid/trauma/medical skills.  Go and get some training.  Do not think a few field books are going to cut it.

Whether it is planting a garden, splinting a leg, starting a fire...There is no substitute for training and practice.

Skills are the most valuable asset we all have.

...we have a few lists of what we have in certain areas (medical, food, etc) and we add items to the list at times when we think of something useful...helps keep us on track with our on-hand items that we believe will make life better in hard times.

I really want to take Wilderness First Aid next month (for scouts), but it's two consecutive Saturdays, and my wife isn't having any part of it. 🙁

I'm sorry, did someone say there was a weekend spa getaway for their wife?
