I came across this article that shows they expect to be able to deliver 5 percent of the requested water in 2014, this would be devastating to people and the farmers and would to the food supply of the US

In the run-up to the holidays, few noticed a rather horrifying number California water managers released last week: 5%.

+

That’s the percentage of requested water the California State Water Project (SWP), the largest manmade distribution system in the US, expects to deliver in 2014. The SWP supplies water to two-thirds of the state’s 38 million residents and 750,000 acres of farmland.

Ending one of its driest years in recorded history for the second year in a row, California, an agricultural and technological powerhouse, faces extreme drought conditions in 2014 unless winter storms materialize between now and April, according to the US National Weather Service.

utilize local growers.it could be a win win situation. we could do a hydroponic green house. grow tomatoes, lettuce, onions etc. year round. local beef and chickens. just tossing out ideas- brainstorming.

yeah, something I've been looking at, if the end result was a more local focused food economy, I guess that's not a bad thing

news keeps getting better and better for California

Water isn't the only resource running short in California. The drought-stricken state is also low on natural gas.

With a move that usually comes in the height of summer when temperatures are soaring and air conditioners blasting, Californians were urged to voluntarily cut their electricity use after frigid weather across the U.S. and Canada caused a shortage of natural gas at Southern California power plants.

The so-called Flex Alert, in which residents are asked to turn off unneeded lights, avoid using large appliances or equipment, and turn off electrically powered heaters, was allowed to expire at 10 p.m. Thursday, nine hours after it began.

The shortage was only in Southern California, but the north was asked to do its part too.

"Statewide electricity and gas conservation will help free up both electricity and gas supplies for Southern Californians," the California Independent System Operator, which runs the state's power grid, said in a statement.

There was no immediate call for an extension of the alert, but it wasn't clear whether more could be coming.
