just need a helicopter now!
Building for sale. Comes with: helicopter deck and 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Wait, what?
The Chesapeake Light Tower – 14 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach – has both, and it hit the auction block last month.
The U.S. Department of Energy assumed oversight of the tower from the Coast Guard in 2012 for $90,000.
“The goal was to create an offshore research facility, including a meteorological tower,” said Kathryn Walsh, spokeswoman for the Department of Energy.
Starting in 2013, Walsh said the department’s National Renewable Energy Lab conducted “engineering and environmental assessments of the tower” to build the research facility.
Plans went awry in 2014 when the department determined that necessary structural upgrades to use the tower as a meteorological tool would cost too much. The tower, instead, was prepared for auction by the General Services Administration.
Built in 1965, the 120-foot-tall light tower is one of six towers – called “Texas Towers” – along the East Coast. This one has seven rooms, a bathroom, storage closets, a radio room, kitchen and a common room. There are also generators, a water heater, fuel tanks, solar panels and a power distribution room to keep the tower’s utilities running.
The actual light tower is on the southeast corner of the structure, reaching more than 35 feet above the surface of the helicopter deck. There are several walkways and decks around the exterior of the light tower and a boat landing.
