I am thinking of putting together some packs for some of my immediate family for christmas, I thought this would be a good exercise to get some good ideas from others, what do you think would be important for a 72 hour bag? One of the first things I put in mine is a whistle for each family member, sometimes people can get separated and a whistle is a easy way to communicate your location

what is important for you guys?

Flashlight - my favorite EDC is http://www.countycom.....opper.html altough it's not waterproof + Batteries (for said flashlight)

Clothing Shoes/boots & 2 pairs wool socks (thickness depending on weather)Waterproof outer layer, jacket & pants, Wool under-layer (wool because it keeps you warm when wet & won't burn like other synthetics.)

Metal cup or water bottle that you can boil water in

Hygiene kit - toothpaste, hand sanitizer, Wet-Wipes, sunscreen, lip balm, vaseline (important if you have walk hike all day), soap, liquid shampoo)

First Aid Kit - Self explanatory

Fire Starting - Includes 3 methods, lighter, synthetic tinder, metal match, waterproof matches, fatwood etc.)

Contractor Bags (good for shelter, water carry, gear carry etc.)

Notebook & pencils (I like "Rite in the Rain" brand

Multi-tool (your preference)

Para-cord, Binoculars, Duct Tape,

SAS Survival Guide & some interesting reading/playing cards etc.

Compass (you can get a small one to clip on the bag.

Ziplock bags for keeping stuff dry & separated

Paperwork - Copies of critical ID, list of phone numbers & addresses, credit card info, etc.)

Cash

For city slickers, I have in my bag construction eye glasses and facemasks. Imagine a 911 walk through dust & dirt, fire etc.

Oh, and food + water...

Plus, if you have room, some water filtration devices. There are many options for this, some are very small & would be perfect for a GHB.

I have the Katadyn Pocket water filter.

Wonder about the steripen products at time.

And have thought about the straw products.

Is there a particular straw that is suggested ?

Is it the "life straw ?"

I've added a slingshot to mine. I was trying to think of a way to add a hunting weapon without taking up too much room, and this fit the bill. Perfect for small game hunting and the wire frame fits without taking up too much space/weight. And you don't need to bring ammo for it.
