My brother and I are very similar in a lot of ways, but worlds apart on other ideologies. He leans more liberal, while I am more conservative. He never even owned a gun till several years ago when he started hunting, he started with a bow, moved to black powder, then I gave him the first marlin .30-30 I ever bought.
He came up and visited about 4 or 5 years ago. I was sitting at my computer working on some e-mails when he came in my bedroom and was sitting on my bed talking to me, when he looked over at my closet.
What's that he asked, my gun safe I said. I showed him some things I had.
He looked at the floor, what's those he asked. Some ammo cans, I had bought some ammo the day before and hadn't put it away yet. So he started poking around and I showed him some gear I had. We ended up talking till late in the night, the next morning they loaded up the car and headed home, before he left, he gave me a hug and a kiss, told me he loved me and said he's a little concerned about me! I replied there's no reason to be, I am concerned for the future and the impact that it will have on my loved ones, including you and your family. I am just trying to live a simple life and insulate my family from any hardships that may or may not happen. But one thing for sure is we are all getting older, and in my mind this will help us navigate just the normal pitfalls that happen in life.
He gave me another hug, and said if anything does happen, I'll be up. I laughed and said no you won't, not unless you bring some supplies and don't come empty handed.
He laughed got in his car and headed home
So I was on facebook last night and I saw these two things on his timeline
With the downfall of a civilization has gold ever become the standard currency?
BE PREPARED! DO YOUR BEST!
I asked him if he had been drinking
he responded nope!
it's true, I think the man has probably drank less than a six pack his whole life
so I guess the reason for this rambling post is have you guys had any friends or family who have done a complete 180 from their thoughts on emergency preparedness?
I had a friend call me the other night who has never had anything to do with guns and has always shook his head at me about gardening and stuff and was asking me about ar-15's and seeds, weird

I think that people all have different abilities to ignore problems or signs of problems. It occurs to me that the threshold of burying our heads in the sand is lower amongst members of this board than the general population. That being said, the writing on the wall from 4-5 years ago is getting much harder to ignore or avoid.
Hopefully your brother sees that his concern for you was foolish and colored by a denial type bias.
I bet that there are members of my family that think I am extreme in my thoughts, my English major bro-in-law particularly. He rolls his eyes at all of the family members that concealed carry.

My dad was always pretty conservative and my mom is an ex-teacher and extremely liberal. Neither one has ever really pushed their politics on my brother and I so I'm thankful for that. Well when they were up last month, they wanted to have the "this is what's there if anything ever happens to us" talk. I was totally surprised when my dad told me he had a bunch of silver coins stashed because he didnt trust what was going to happen to the dollar in the future. He was never really a big gun guy, but he owns a shotgun that he used to hunt with years ago and he was telling me about how he was upset about how the 2nd Amendment was going to get trampled all over and how he was worried about the future direction of the country for us and our kids. Now I wouldn't say it was a complete 180, but it was just a bunch of views he never expressed to me.
