Report: 1,000 injured by meteorite in eastern Russia
As Russians survey the damage caused by a nearly 10-ton meteorite's explosion in the sky Friday, updated reports claim as many as 1,000 people were injured by shattering windows and debris.
CHELYABINSK, Russia As many as 1,000 people were injured after a 10-ton meteorite exploded as it streaked across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and damaging buildings.
The Interfax estimates of nearly 1,000 are far above the 400 originally reported, officials said, according to The Associated Press. Many of the injuries were caused by broken glass when the meteorite shattered thousands of windows.
"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people's houses to check if they were OK," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, about 930 miles east of Moscow, the biggest city in the affected region.
"We saw a big burst of light then went outside to see what it was, and we heard a really loud thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.
