Please add to the list:

I have watched several of the Doomsday Prepper shows and have come to realize that to be prepared does not mean you have to go to the extremes that some of them do. With a few changes you can prepare your family for most emergencies that might arise. You will not be able to prepare for every emergency but some basics can go a long way.

Store food and water for 2 to 4 weeks per person in the household. Either store bought or better yet if you learn to grow and can your own it will help in the long run. You don't have to do it all at once but if buying then every time you grocery shop purchase $10 extra to put in storage.

Learn and practice some basic survival skills. First aid, fire starting, shelter building, food gathering (hunting/fishing). Even some self defense skills would be helpful- hand to hand, knife and firearm. There are always classes offered to teach these skills. Local hospitals, scouts, 4-h, the library and of course the internet.

Save some cash which will work in short term scenario but for a long term scenario (EMP) silver/gold coins, jewelry, anything that can be bartered.

There are a lot more things that can be done so please add to the list.

Have Fun. Be Safe. Keep the Rolling Side Down.

Whiskey/liquor for bartering as well as an antiseptic. If you don't have a wood stove, look into oil based emergency heaters. Build a root cellar in your back yard, can be pretty small or big as you please. Work on your community, why stand alone if not absolutely necessary, most everyone has something to contribute. Try to maintain your health.

Do you know of any resources to help find local water catchment tanks? Searching the web and I keep finding places in Texas, but the cost of shipping would be insane. Looking for something 450Gal or more, not the typical 55 gal drums.

Update on the free pepsi barrels. I called the bottler near me(35 miles south)and talked with a representative. "We used to give them away years ago but we have been contacted by main office and can no longer give them away because there is to much "pepsi" info on outside of barrel."
