I know a man that sell brand new 30 gallon blue water barrels with the bung caps for 10 bucks each. I bought a few last year to use. I ended up planting some fruit trees and blueberry bushes in them after cutting some in half.
I want to get a few more for water storage for drinking in case of an emergency. I saw on the ready store's website that they have water drops to add to the water before sealing it up for $15 a bottle, it will treat 50-55 gallons. I have also read that some bleach added does the same trick.
Does anyone here store water? How often do you rotate stock?
What is the time frame for boiling untreated vs. treated water?

The camper I had was equipped with a 40 gallon water tank. My water source at home is a private well, so it has nothing extra added to it. I never used the tank for drinking water, just showers and dish washing to be on the safe side. I quickly found that in the heat of the summer algae would grow in the tank. I started adding half a cup of bleach to a full tank and the problem was solved. This was however for short term use and never kept water in the tank for more than a week at a time. I have read that bleach will break down in as little as six months if not kept cool or away from sun light.
al, you are in hvac, you know a plumber? I still have this crazy idea in my mind where if you could hook up water storage tanks before the cold water supply for your hot water tank you would have a constant fresh water supply, would never have to worry about rotating it or treating it

I understand that line of thinking. I don't think you would want to use standard type water containers for what you are talking about. Would probabaly need to use real commercial water storage tanks because of the pressure. i have close to 70 psi at my hose bibs.
Would probably need to add expansion tanks.
good idea, gonna ask a few plumbers i know about this.
