I guess they could build up as well as across. Some food for thought.....strong backs are a dime a dozen, what skills do you have that are valuable that make you an asset instead of an anchor in such a community? If its a trade skill, can I find someone better or with an additional skill that sets them apart from the herd?

when I read this, the first thing I thought was the survivalist community in lights out, no thanks. Like others said 7000 families on 2000 acres, I don't see that being feasible

That's pretty cramped. A smaller community would probably be more realistically sustainable, and also keep folks out of each others business a bit better.
