I have been looking for ways to covert our lifestyle to homesteading sans a homestead and was trying to find a way to get a small garden going. The problem is that our small back door patio is concrete and covered by a large shade tree.

I recently became aware of a local community garden in a prime growing area. The plots are $75 a year for 100 sq ft. Thankfully, I have also been invited by an acquaintance who is a master gardener to come out to his garden on Saturdays for a year to learn. The community garden does allow for multiple plots to be reserved.

I did some research on the yield of a garden of this size and this article seems to make it sound very promising http://www.motherear.....x?PageId=1

In your experience, how large are the gardens you guys are growing? I'm trying to cut our grocery bill substantially so I'm looking to be harvesting weekly for our needs (For two adults).

Our area has a very unique climate such that I've been told we can grow many crops year round.

at our largest we had about 900 square feet in raised beds, I would recommend picking the 5 items that you eat the most and just focus on that for your initial planting, I know people that plant zucchini every year but then end up giving a majority of it away, why bother wasting the time, space and energy. Square foot gardening would work well for that space to maximize your output. I would stay away from tall plants like corn, sunflower, etc. They do work but provide too much shade for surrounding plants and can get choked out easily from my experience. Here is a quick overview.

Thanks for the extra info guys. We started volunteering at the local churches food bank garden last week. I'll ask if it's okay to take some pics and post them here.

great idea JSW. you will be able to learn a lot from your friend.

what I would do is grow the foods that are the most expensive and buy the food the is least expensive at the store.
