Basically, as carbon based life forms, you are going to have to kill and eat another carbon based life form to survive. In order to truly thrive it's pretty well accepted that you need to kill and eat a wide variety of carbon based life forms. What's the difference between that cow that your burger came from and the lettuce or tomato or the wheat that made the bun? Are any of those plants any less "alive"? Are they somehow less evolved to where the ethical concerns no longer apply? If ethics are the barometer we are using I would say they are more evolved since they don't actually need to kill another carbon based life form to provide themselves sustenance. They simply use the decomposed already dead remains of life (soil) for nutrients and the energy of the sun (completely sustainable for another 5 billion years or so) to create simple sugars to feed themselves internally.
Bottom line is we feel guilt about killing animals and not plants because we can relate to them. They are more similar to us than plants. We can look into their eyes, and see many of the same emotions we have; happiness, fear and pain. These similarities are what allows us to empathize with them.
I should note that I am very much against factory farming, mostly due to the conditions the animals are made to live in during their very short, traumatic lives. Also due to many of the practices such as blanket use of steroids and antibiotics, and strict grain diets to produce larger, fatter animals. However, In comparison to an animal in the wild, a farm raised, pastured animal who is well cared for by a responsible farmer lives a much less stressful, happier (albeit usually shorter) life. They also pretty much across the board are guaranteed a faster, less gruesome and less painful death.
I don't really care for killing stuff, unless I'm going to eat it or it's a pest (mice anyone?), and even then it's certainly not something I enjoy or want to do. But if I'm a cow, and I have the choice of living in a place where I get plenty of food, a warm place to sleep at night and protection from predators... or I can be free, have to hope I can find enough to eat every day, be out in the elements my entire existence and almost surely die a horrible death from infection, sickness or being eaten alive by a predator... I'll take the farm all day.
Yeah... my whole life I've been a vegetarian. Raised that way. Parents didn't like the factory farming so thus my diet was born. My brother was raised that way too but he ended up eating meat.
For a bit now I've been vegan-ish. By that I mean hardly any animal product but occasionally a good quality cheese is tough to pass up. Latley though I've been eating just a bit of eggs as well when wife cooks it. I know that personally I couldn't kill an animal. I also need to add I have a lot of respect to those who actually raise their own food or live and take just what they need from the wild vs outsourcing the killing.
We are raising our kids eating meat though ( its very little really) . It has to be organic..and I'd prefer to have it be wild or from local farmer (knowing where it comes from) but compromise. No red meat ..mostly organic chicken, turkey. I should get them to eat deer. My wife though is pretty good with a gun and we have a wild turkey flock around and she is almost thinking of shooting one. She's like most others, where she doesn't want to actually process the animal. I have a feeling if more people had to go through that process then a lot less meat would be eaten. I also try to eat a very diverse diet. Mushrooms,Veggies LOTS of veggies (exeptc brussel sproutes and beets ...yuck), been playing more with wild greens like sheep sorrel,Garlick mustard,dandilians , plantians., nuts, Lots of breads and pasta's.
If I were to eat meat it would be something wild. Turkey, Deer (we don't have moose around here like you mainers) . Squirrel is everywhere. Fish. Allthough I'm not sure I could even kill a fish...it keeps twitching after it dead or should be dead..that freaks me out..kind of a wimp like that!
Some animal with a spirit that is free. Confined animals would not be for me personally, but respect those who choose to raise for food. Those animals are loved much more then a supermarket meat.
I have accidentally through the years ate meat and I'm sure some times got some animal fat in fries or something. I know then where I have accidentally ate it ..I didn't like the weird taste or texture..so I don't feel like I am missing much. I've noticed animal eater tend to assimilate muscles easier then I do though
I know the nearings were vegetarians and lived a very long life of 90-ish. Their portions were modest and I think that is important as well. its tough to be a fat vegetarian though..i mean maybe you could do it, but the food just has less density then meat so I can eat quite a bit of volume it seems.
Just some ramblings. You can try it and see if it works for you..but I'm sure it would be a large change for your body k. I've had friends that tried it for a while most went back but I think even the break gave them more energy they said. It makes sense b/c its so much work to break down your body uses its energy to do it? Just something I've gathered b/c here its not that common
