Agreed, HFF. There has to be a cheap and easy DIY element.

For the rooting hormone, a quick google search returned a bunch of results in the $5-$15 range.

pretty much, that's the way I'm reading it, could create a whole orchard from a tree it sounds like

true, so if you got the 5 pot system, you could generate 5 seedlings in 8 weeks, so if you started in May you could get 10 seedlings, not sure how well this would work trying to do it in sept and oct when the tree is going dormant, I wonder if it would be better to pot them and bring them in doors and plant the following spring

Very interesting. I would for sure look into that system if I had trees.
