We have a lot of them here that grow wild, butnive never seen much fruit on them. Usually a critter gets them the day befor I'm going to pick them. They flower fairly early and apparently pollination can be an issue which is probable why I don't get many fruits.
There is a lake not far from here where there are some huge groves of old well established trees. They fruit like crazy.
If you've never had one seek them out. They are delicious.
They call them the WV banana around here

Hey Porkchop, I'm in NJ so I'm zone 5 also (although I have seen my zipcode listed in zone 6B occasionally)
If you're in zone 5 they should do well. They need partial shade for the first two years and then they prefer full sun after that. PawPaws also have a some difficulty with pollination. They are pollinated by certain flies and beetles, but not bees. The male and female parts of the flower mature at different rates, and they do not self-pollinate so two different species of tree are necessary. I have heard that hand pollination is sometime necessary if you dont have the right conditions in your area. All that being said, the fruit is supposedly worth the effort. I look forward to having some this year if my neighbor's trees produce. I cant wait to plant mine in a few weeks!
