With just one-tenth of an acre of space, it's possible to grow your entire diet, claims a Northern California gardening research group. Back in the 1970s, Ecology Action and group founder John Jeavons outlined a system called Grow Biointensive.

Biointensive agriculture isn't a new way to garden, but instead it relies on principles used by ancient Greek, Roman and Chinese. It focuses on teaching individuals- not large-scale farmers- to enrich their soil so that they can grow their own food close to population centers.

Nice video!

I am going to a talk tonight by a guy who is making a living farming on about 1.5 acres, just north of the Vermont border. He wrote a book about it, but it is in French. They are in the process of translating the book into English so if the talk is good I will grab the book.

Use google translate if you want to check it out - http://lejardinierma.....icher.com/

They are touring now, I think in support of the drive to get the book published in English. I would imagine they have an open policy at their farm so you could probably visit.

I will report back after the talk this evening. If they are doing more organic/sustainable farming, as I imagine they are, it could be worth a visit.

The talk was great. Jean-martin is really cool, very friendly guy.

The model they use is amazing. He and his wife have taken it to such an efficient level because they only have 1.5 acres to make their living off. 2011 sales were $130,000, with profit margins between 40% and 50% over the 10 years they have been doing this. His expenses include the land (which he also lives on), very limited machinery as hand tools are mostly used, a delivery vehicle and a bit of additional labour above what he and his wife do.

I asked about visitation and they do 3 days a year where they do tours of the farm. He limits this because he and his wife represent 2/3 of the labour on the farm so to have them giving tours all the time randomly would cripple the operation.

I will try to go for a visit this year if I can find the time.

They have managed to translate the first paragraph of Jean-Martin's book and they have released it is a bit of a teaser.

Read the intro chapter here...

The full translation of the book is locked in and will be available early 2014. Can't wait to add it to the collection.
