Joel Salatin discusses the monopoly supermarkets have over our food supply. In order for food to be sold in stores, there are slotting fees, insurance requirements, mandatory GAP or BMP certification, and market screening. For animals, this requires medications and vaccinations, and slurry manure systems and free-range and compost is not allowed.
There are a growing number of supermarket alternatives including farmer's markets, buying clubs, and electronic virtual farmer's markets. Virtual food markets are actually cheaper than the supermarket because there's no cashier, physical presence, or warehouses and it localizes the food system.
