Last spring and last fall we tried to grow potatos in tires. I tried a way I have heard from a customer of mine.

I cut the inside of some tires out a few inches bigger for more space. We filled up the tire with a miracle grow soil and planted four potatoes, we cut them in half and put 3 or 4 per tire eyes up. The plants grew up and out, then we added another tire and more soil. we ended up 3 tires high. They looked great.

When the tops died off in about 3 months i knocked the tires over and didn't find a single potato.

We had tried again about mid-august for fall with the same result. Plant grew awesome but no potatoes

I just picked up some reds and yukons from lowes the other day and plan to start some more in 2 weeks. This time I'm starting 2 tires deep and probaly staying just like that.

Was my problem starting with just 1 tire high? (not much room to grow down)

Springtime I got yukons from walmart lawn and garden and blues from the customer that told me about planting in tires.

Fall I had bought them from home depot.

I also went back to the customers house for a service call at the start of fall, while there I told her I tried growing in tires in the spring and failed. She also said she didn't get any potatos either.

Didn't see the thread on tires. Saw when you put the windows on them in your home thread. We will be planting soon also. We really didn't have a winter at all. In all less than 10 days below 32 degrees if I had to guess.

Think carrots would work good in 2 stacked truck tires?

I've thought about tires, but the wife sorta shrugged at the idea, I think we are gonna try the straw method this year.

I haven't done the straw method before, but I've heard good things about it too.
