the book "guerilla gardening" talks about using unconventional spaces for landscape gardening, like traffic or parking lot islands, as well as commandeering unused vacant spaces for food gardening. the book is worth the read. it talks about plants that are hardy and useful, which i've planted around my own yard.
i donated a few bucks and seeds to a group in detroit that was tossing seed bombs into vacant lots that had been formerly used for gardening (without permission). the owners fenced and locked the gates and this group was planting soft fruits like mulberries, blackberries, and raspberries that grew through the fences and an assortment of wildflowers. i really didn't have a dog in the race, but i thought i'd help out a friend that was passionate about the cause.
