I always have my eye out for old skillets.  The newer ones are cast in sand and the surface is slightly pitted.  I love the nice smooth surface of old and antique cast iron.  This is a really good tutorial on how to recondition.  I've been using grape seed oil to season, I never used lard, but I might give it a try to see if there's any difference.

I never knew that.  I always thought the pitted surface was just how cast iron was.
