If this was a common occurrence, floating row covers might help.

I think the first thing I would do is look through my seeds and pull out all of my short season hybrids and get them planted.  Then go online and look for other short season seeds to fill in the gaps.

The late summer/fall garden would be really important.  Extending the growing season would be really important.

I would also concentrate on the most grocery-store expensive items-greens, herbs, peppers, etc.  One of the reasons I garden is to cut down the grocery bill.  If the only think I could grow is a couple of raised beds of lettuce and herbs, that knocks a significant chunk out of the grocery bill.

An excellent plan Ash, I wonder how beneficial a trellis system with clear fiber panels would work for protection

Reminds me of the episode of Little House on the Prairie where hail destroys the wheat fields.  All of the able bodied men in town left to find work, and the women put the kids on their backs, went out into the fields to salvage what was left and harvest it.

I just watched that recently!

Row covers can help a bit (been there) but they have to be fastened securely.

We have 7 of the 9 seasons on DVD.  My poor, sheltered daughter goes to school and talks about Laura Ingalls and her friends all go "huh?"
