Congrats CC! I agree with KE, perenials around the front, strawberries, blueberries ect. I would set up a rain water catchment system. I think we had talked about this on your thread on the sg, what is your water source? Are you on the ogallala? Chickens are easy man, like HFF and others said, food, clean water and coop. Make sure you give them some space to, I think the minimum is 2 feet per bird, I give 4-5 so they don't go all hannibal lecter on each other. As far as the fruit trees, prune them. You want to prune when they are dormant, so it's a little late now. Remove all the dead stuff and any branches that are pointing down and toward the center of the tree, you want to create a open space in the middle for sunlight and air, this man has a great series on pruning

as far as what to plant, sit down and write down what you guys eat normally, and base your planting off that, it always cracks me up when people plant 20 zucchini plants and barely eat it.

Congrats man, I know it's been a long time coming

Thanks KVR.

We'll be on city water which comes from the a couple reservoirs on the trinity river, Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville. We get water restrictions in periods of exceptional drought, but that's only happened once in the last 3 years. Lots of people do rainwater catchment here. It works well all year up until mid summer. It seams like it rains regularly all spring, but then it doesn't rain again until hurricane season in september or october. Right now the house doesn't have any gutters and it needs some work on a roof over a back porch. We'll get a roofer to fix that, but I don't know if rainwater catchment is something I should try on my own, or pay for.

I listened to most of your podcast on chickens. Right now they have a small tractor. For now, we'll just buy more feed and keep them in that. They seem to be ok, but I think the coop is too small for that many birds.

I liked the Pruning video. most of those trees have no open space so that will be work. I guess I'll prune them in late fall when their leaves fall off. Is there any feeding I should do for them now?

I'm sure there are some other libertarians here. I am pretty libertarian for a progressive, so I won't have problem with this, but I wouldn't mind hearing all of your thoughts on it as well. My county and the federal government will be providing a grant for half the cost of a new storm shelter in my county. My new house doesn't have one, and all that mess in OKC is only 90 minutes north of us, so I am definitely interested. Would y'all take a grant from FEMA to build a storm shelter?

Congratulations!

I like chickens. They are so easy. The most important thing is to give them a safe secure place at night. Mine free range during the day and go into the coop at night.

Kelp is one of the best things to use in a vegan garden. It is a pretty balanced nutrient for all things including people and animals!

Have fun!

I would have no issue taking part of a program like that

I hope it doesn't drag on for a year or something. I'd like to get an underground shelter built so I can use it to store beer, grow mushrooms, store canned foods, and hide from tornadoes if necessary. Mostly for beer storage though. I see no other way that I'll ever get a lager brewed in Texas. Plus, this way I can get good and drunk if my house gets destroyed.
